The Prince of Wales School (POW) was formally established in Freetown, Republic of Sierra Leone on April 6, 1925 to foster science education and studies in modern languages. Officially inaugurated by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, the School marked a turning point in the advancement of a balanced secondary education in Sierra Leone.

The Washington DC area chapter of the OPWA is part of a global alumni organization of the Prince of Wales School, which includes the Old Prince Waleans Association of UK and Ireland, Associations of New Jersey, Georgia, and California).

The Old Prince Waleans Association (OPWA), Washington DC Metropolitan Area, has been in existence since 1988. It holds regular meetings at 6:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7410 New Hampshire Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912.
