The theme for this year’s program is: “Forward: Building on a Future of Hope”

OPWA is a non-profit organization whose members are former students of the Prince of Wales School in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The group is actively engaged in research and studies to implement strategies and programs geared towards improving education at the Prince of Wales School in particular and Sierra Leone as a whole. Following is a brief account of accomplishments achieved by OPWA in conjunction with other chapters in the United States of America and the United Kingdom:

  • The following update is a status of what the Prince of Wales Alumni Associations and Global Leadership accomplished or had intended to do over the past 18 months and intends to do in the near future. It has been broken down into a pre-Ebola, during Ebola and post Ebola timeframe.
  • The major aim of the chapters and global leadership prior to the Ebola outbreak was to support the renovation of the Assembly Hall building and providing chairs and tables for the school. We now have 33 students that have been awarded scholarships.
  • As with all schools, the Prince of Wales School was also closed down during the height of the Ebola outbreak. Members of the California Branch helped raise funds to purchase equipment and materials to send to Sierra Leone to aid with the Ebola outbreak. As a result of that, they received a NOSLINA Community award for their efforts. Renovation of the Assembly Hall building was suspended. The Global leadership agreed to still provide a Christmas bonus to the teachers, more as a recognition of support for the disruption visited on them by the Ebola Virus Disease.
  • Earlier in 2015, we were informed that the Sierra Leone Government had agreed for part of the school field to be used as a temporary Ebola Treatment Center by the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), because of the strategic location of the school. As a result of the schools collaboration, some of the school buildings were repainted, the canteen was renovated and re-equipped and functional, water & sanitation in the entire school with the exception of the science block has been overhauled and working properly and the EU building was also renovated. The school field was returned to its original condition.
  • The renovation of the Assembly Hall has resumed and while there is still a lot to be done, there is visible progress. The Global leadership will contribute towards this renovation. Another project of importance that we need to consider is the replacement of the raised roof of the Science Building which continues to leak and damage the concrete roof below.

We are proud of our accomplishments so far, but we also know that we could not have done all of that without your support. We depend on your generosity to be able to continue our work. If you are unable to attend the function, a gratuitous donation to OPWA will be greatly appreciated. Please mail your donation to: Treasurer, OPWA, P. O. Box 3072, Silver Spring, MD 20918-3072.

On behalf of OPWA, I thank you very much in advance for your anticipated support and I hope that all of us continue to “Keep a niche within our hearts for the Prince of Wales, Kingtom.” FORWARD!!!

Best Regards,
Christian O. Davies
